Introduction

This Web publishing guidebook contains information pertaining to the development, publishing and management of official school district Web sites.  It is provided as a resource to define how the school district will utilize the World Wide Web as a communication resource.  The information contained in this guidebook should be thoroughly reviewed and adhered to by all individuals who publish content and/or are responsible for content on school district Web sites.

Purpose

q       The availability of Internet access in all Timberlane schools provides an educational opportunity for students and staff to contribute to the Timberlane District's "Web Pages" on the World Wide Web.

q       The creation of a Web page provides a means of communication for the purpose of sharing information from the Timberlane Regional School District to the community about school curriculum and instruction, School Board-authorized activities, and information relating to our schools and our mission. A Web page can also provide instructional resources for staff and students.

Publishing Guidelines

These guidelines are to be used as reference and provide specific information regarding Web publishing by all levels throughout the school district.  All published content must reflect positively upon the district, Department or school.  A creation date or date last updated should be included on the appropriate Web pages to indicate the current status of its content. The publisher of the site is responsible for ensuring that content is accurate and current.  This includes the regular review, testing, and modification of all links and the withdrawal of any documents, which become inaccurate or irrelevant.

District Level

District level refers to main publishing activities that represent the district as a whole. The district Web Site will contain links to all district-wide Department level Web pages and school Web pages.  It may also contain links to other Web sites that support the mission of the school district.  All non-district links must be authorized by the Superintendent's Office.

Department Level

A department level Web site would represent a district-wide department that supports all grade levels.  Some examples are Athletics, Pupil Personnel, Technology, etc. The district-wide Web site will provide links to any department-level Web pages that are developed.

School Level

School level Web sites represent the individual school and its associated activities.  It can include Web pages developed by school staff and students.  All publications developed by staff must be associated with specific school-related programs or activities.  All publications developed by students must be associated with specific class projects.  In addition, all student publications must be sponsored by a teacher or other class project facilitator who would be responsible for the content.

School Volunteer Organizations

School Volunteer Organization (PTA, etc.) publications may be hosted on the school district computer network.  However, the publications must meet all of the district's publishing standards and be authorized by the Principal.

Training and Support

The Technology Department will provide its services when possible and where appropriate to facilitate Web page design training, promote consistent district-wide Web page design standards, and troubleshoot any technical difficulties that may arise.  Technology department staff may develop Web page publications for others if requested, but only if approval has been given by the District Technology Coordinator.
