Hour of Code at Timberlane

December 1, 2016

Technology Director Ken Henderson issues an important message about the Hour of Code initiative:

We live in a world surrounded by technology, and we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works. However, only a tiny fraction of us are learning how technology works. Fewer than half of all schools teach computer science.

During Computer Science Education Week (December 5-11), the Timberlane Regional School District will participate in the largest learning event in history called “The Hour of Code” in which boasts the participation of more than 100 million students worldwide.

The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify “code”, to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.  This grassroots campaign is supported by over 400 partners and 200, 000 educators worldwide[1].

Our Hour of Code is making a statement that our district is teaching these foundational 21st Century skills. To continue bringing programming activities to your students, we want to make our Hour of Code event huge. I encourage you to allow your students to practice Hour of Code tutorials and activities at home which are available year round http://hourofcode.com/us.
