Nurses/Health Services

TRSD Nurses perform routine screenings on students in kindergarten, in 4th grade, in 7th grade, and in 10th grade. These screenings may include blood pressure, vision, and hearing. Parents will be notified by letter if a student’s screening is outside normal limits.  It is up to the parent to follow up with their primary physician for more in depth screening.
The TRSD nurses would like to remind parents that part of an annual physical exam can include both a hearing and vision screening. Please inquire (when booking the appointment) about including this service in the exam.

Current School Year Immunization Requirements

Prescription medication should not be taken during school hours, if at all possible. Medication is to be administered by the school nurse, principal, or other designee. Medication will be administered in school only after the following information has been received and filed in the student’s health record. This includes self-carrying medications such as epinephrine auto injectors and inhalers.

A written statement from the licensed prescriber detailing the route of taking the medication, dosage, and time schedule of the medication.
A written authorization from the parent/guardian indicating that the school nurse/designee administer the prescribed medication to the student.

Sick Children of any age should not attend school. Your child will benefit from extra rest and will recover more quickly while minimizing the spread of illness at school.
Fever-
Any fever over 100 degrees during the night or morning before school. Students should be fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications such as Tylenol or Motrin before returning to school. For fevers over 101 a call to the doctor may be necessary.
Head Lice-
According to the Department of Public Health and Human Service recommendations, a student with a confirmed case of head lice may return to school after proper treatment. All cases of lice should be reported to the school nurse.
Conjunctivitis-  (pink eye)
According to the Department of Public Health and Service guidelines, students with crusty, itchy, red eyes with thick yellow drainage should be excluded from school. Once a diagnosis of conjunctivitis is made, the student may return to school after 24 hours of antibiotic treatment.
Strep throat-
In accordance with the Department of Health and Human Services guidelines, students with strep throat may return to school after 24 hours of antibiotic treatment and be free of fever.
Staph Infections-
In accordance with the Department of Health and Human Service guidelines, all infections should be reported to nurse and all open wounds must be covered while at school/ school activities.
Rashes-
In accordance with the Department of Health and Human Service guidelines, any student with an unusual rash, or rash with fever should be evaluated by physician prior to returning to school.
Vomiting and/or Diarrhea-
Students should be kept home for any episodes of vomiting or diarrhea occurring within 24 hours of the school day.

All absences should be called into the attendance line at your child’s school Please include symptoms of illness. In addition please report any contagious illnesses, hospitalizations or injuries to the school nurse. Doctor’s notes are required for activity restrictions related to illness or injury for physical education, wellness, recess or school related activities. For illness/injury that occurs during the day at school, students should see the school nurse who will then assess student and arrange dismissal, when appropriate. Students should not contact parents/guardians to arrange dismissal without going to the nurse.

Things Parents Should Communicate to TRSD Nurses

• Any written communication from your doctor’s office post illness/injury
• Call with any changes to demographics or updated medical information
• When calling a student in sick please let us know if they have been confirmed of a contagious illness

Things TRSD Nurses Want Parents to Know

• Students are not permitted to bring in medication (on themselves) for the nurse.  Parents must drop it off at the Nurse’s Office.
• Please remember that OTC meds require an MD order, just as a prescription medication would
• Please review the reasons to keep a child home from school. Any questions concerning this call the nurse!
• We cannot stress enough to have immunizations in order for the start of the school year.
• Please bring in medication, MD order, and parental/guardian consent for that medication at the onset of the school year.
• If a spacer is ordered for a student with an inhaler please provide this.
• Please note expiration dates of your medications and supply the nurse with new medication before the expiration date. 
• Please note when refills are needed for the nurse and supply this before the supply in the Health Office is depleted.
• Each year when entering info into Info Snap be sure to double check for completeness of the document(s).
• If your child is in a peanut/tree nut sensitive room please call the teacher and/or nurse for any questions regarding this process to ensure safety of our children.
• For our younger children a change of clothing kept in their backpack can come in handy!
• Please have students coming to school with appropriate clothing for the change in seasons. 
• Please review the dress code to avoid a call to the parent/guardian for a change in clothing.

Food Allergy Guidelines:

• Notify the school of the child’s allergy(s), prior to entry into school or immediately after a diagnosis of a life threatening allergy is made.
• Provide emergency information and phone contacts to the school before the first day of school.
