Student Assistance Program
SAP Program Description
The Student Assistance Program is a short-term counseling and referral service for students who may be having performance and/or behavioral concerns. This confidential service will screen for a broad variety of teen issues, such as depression, anger management, substance abuse, anxiety and other mental health issues that may impact a student’s ability to focus in school. Referrals are made by administrators, guidance counselors, teachers, and students themselves. Educational support groups can be offered, as well as referrals to outside treatment providers.
In addition to the individual and/or group services, the TRSD Student Assistance Program has taken an active role in offering leadership opportunities for students in both the middle school and the high school. Students are trained and offered the opportunity to practice their skills in environments such as the classroom or in the community.
Because one of the programs specialties is looking at substance abuse issues, the federal law of confidentiality governing substance abuse records, 42 CFR Part 2, protects the entire program. Even though students do have a right to privacy around these records, every effort is made to join with parents to make recommendations for the student and family that will help address the issues identified.

About Us
Tim Lena, MSW, CPS has over 26 years of experience in the substance abuse prevention and intervention field. He started working as the Student Assistance Program Coordinator for the Salem School District that was based on Ellen Moorehouse’s model. During this time Mr. Lena also served as a regional and national trainer/consultant for the Northeast Regional Center for Drug Free Schools and Communities, and the National Volunteer Training Center. In 1997, Mr. Lena began working for the Timberlane Regional School District as the Student Assistance Program Coordinator. Tim is Past- Chair of the Southern Rockingham County (So Rock) Coalition for Healthy Youth and has been instrumental in helping secure numerous grants which funded prevention trainings including a statewide Project SUCCESS training for 30 existing SAP’s on the most current Evidence Based Practice. He has actively promoted training and technical assistance that support Mentor/Mentee relationships for the Student Assistance field. Past President of the Prevention Certification Board of NH, he received his Certified Prevention Specialist credential in 2009. He has also been trained as a trainer in the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, and has Co-trained several schools in Timberlane School District. In 2015, Mr. Lena was appointed to the Governor’s Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention, Treatment and Recovery.
Kelley Binette, MSW, MLADC has worked for the Timberlane Regional School District since 2006. She earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work in 2004, and shortly thereafter became a Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor. Kelley has a love for working with young people to help them navigate the trials and tribulations of being an adolescent in today’s world. Kelley has experience working with youth in an outpatient clinical setting as well as an inpatient psychiatric setting. Kelley specializes in both mental health and substance abuse issues.
In addition to working with students individually, Kelley is able to run groups at school, and support students on an as-needed basis. Kelley is also trained in the areas of bullying and suicide prevention, and has partnered with other district employees to train staff on the signs and symptoms of at-risk youth.
Kelley also has participated on several committees to include the Peer Review Committee for the NH Licensing Board for Alcohol and Other Drug Use Professionals and the UNH Social Work Supervisor’s Committee. Locally, Kelley is the chair of the SoROCK Coalition for Healthy Youth, a group dedicated to the prevention of substance misuse in Rockingham County.
